The Sharon Playhouse is thrilled to welcome legendary playwright and actor Charles Busch back to Sharon for a one-night-only staged reading of his hilarious comedy The Divine Sister on Friday, August 28.
Following his memorable Sharon Playhouse appearances in The Tale of the Allergist's Wife and Die, Mommie, Die!, Busch returns with one of his most beloved comedies, joined by an extraordinary cast including Alison Fraser, Julie Halston, Jennifer Van Dyck, Jonathan Walker, and Lucy Rhoades. The evening is directed by Carl Andress.
ABOUT THE PLAY
A wildly witty homage to Hollywood's most beloved films about nuns—from The Song of Bernadette and The Bells of St. Mary's to The Singing Nun and The Sound of Music—The Divine Sister is classic Charles Busch: wickedly funny, gloriously over-the-top, and overflowing with theatrical joy.
The story follows Mother Superior of St. Veronica's Convent as her efforts to save the struggling order are upended by mysterious visitors, forbidden romance, shocking revelations, and increasingly outrageous miracles.
Charles Busch's signature blend of razor-sharp comedy, affection for classic cinema, and larger-than-life characters has made him one of America's most celebrated playwrights. His works include the Tony Award-nominated The Tale of the Allergist's Wife and the Off-Broadway landmark Vampire Lesbians of Sodom. He also wrote and starred in the film adaptations of Psycho Beach Party and Die, Mommie, Die!, earning a Special Jury Prize for Performance at the Sundance Film Festival. In 2024, he was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame.
This special reading reunites five members of the original 2010 Off-Broadway cast of The Divine Sister.
Charles Busch stars alongside Alison Fraser, a two-time Tony Award nominee for Romance/Romance and The Secret Garden, reprising Sister Walburga, and Julie Halston, recipient of the 2021 Isabelle Stevenson Tony Award and beloved by television audiences as Bitsy Von Muffling on Sex and the City and And Just Like That..., returning as Sister Acacius.
The cast also features Sharon Playhouse favorites Jennifer Van Dyck and Jonathan Walker—both longtime collaborators of Busch and Artistic Director Carl Andress who have previously appeared at the Playhouse in Sylvia and Lifespan of a Fact—reprising their original roles.
Completing the cast is Lucy Rhoades, who delighted audiences earlier this season as Katie in Swingtime Canteen and last summer as Dyanne in Million Dollar Quartet. She joins this remarkable company as Agnes, making her Divine Sister debut.

The Divine Sister made its New York debut with a developmental run at Theater for the New City in early 2010 before moving to Off-Broadway at the Soho Playhouse, where it opened September 22, 2010, produced by Daryl Roth and Bob Boyett.
