Based on the 1933 Warner Bros. film, 42nd Street debuted on Broadway in 1980, winning the Tony Award for Best Musical and running nearly nine years. A hit revival in 2001 reaffirmed its place as one of Broadway’s greatest dance shows—a glittering tribute to showbiz dreams, resilience, and the magic of making something beautiful together.

Hope in hard times: Set during the Great Depression, the story celebrates ambition, resilience, and the belief that dreams really can come true—even in tough moments.42nd Street opened on August 25, 1980 at the Winter Garden Theatre on Broadway. The production was a monumental hit, running for a total of 3,486 performances before closing in 1989—making it one of the longest-running American musicals of its era.
The original production was recognized with 8 Tony Award nominations and took home 2 major wins for Best Musical and Best Choreography (for Gower Champion). Other nominations included Best Book of a Musical, Best Featured Actor and Actress, Best Costume Design, and Best Lighting Design.
Broadway and television legend Jerry Orbach (Law and Order, Chicago), brought real star power to the role of Julian Marsh and helped anchor the show’s success. TONY Award winner Tammy Grimes starred alongside him as the tempestuous leading lady, Dorothy Brock.
42nd Street first appeared on the Sharon Playhouse Stage in 2011! It’s joyful, uplifting, and escapist, delivering pure entertainment from start to finish. The show combines nostalgia with high-energy dance, and leaves audiences humming classic tunes and marveling at the sheer athleticism and artistry onstage.
