Background & Timeline
1920s–1940s
A local play-reading group in Sharon, CT evolved into a performing troupe. By 1947, they converted a carriage barn at the Sharon Inn into the Pitchfork Playhouse and launched their first season of live theater.
1950s
Facing growing audiences and financial constraints, the group formed a professional Equity theater. After acquiring the Sharon Inn property, a new Playhouse facility was constructed in 1955 at its current location on Amenia Road.
1960s–1980s
The Playhouse operated under various leaderships and business models, including nonprofit management and outside producers. Financial challenges led to intermittent closures.
1989–1999
Productions were revived through community-professional collaborations. A new producing entity, TriArts, was founded and eventually relocated back to Sharon. A successful capital campaign secured the current Playhouse campus.
2000s
Facility upgrades, year-round programming, and expanded youth education offerings were added, including the construction of the Bok Gallery.
2010s
The organization rebranded officially as The Sharon Playhouse. Programming grew to include Equity contracts and new works. Financial strains and leadership transitions marked the latter part of the decade.
2020–2021
During the pandemic, the Playhouse adapted with outdoor performances and continued community engagement.
2022–Present
Record-breaking seasons resumed post-COVID. A full management team was restored in 2023, positioning the Playhouse for continued artistic growth and organizational sustainability.
