Winnifred the Woebegone isn’t your typical princess—she’s a spirited, quirky swamp-dweller with a heart of gold, determined to win the love of Prince Dauntless. But standing in her way is the scheming Queen Aggravain, who’s crafted an outrageous, seemingly impossible test to keep Winnifred out of the royal family. Will Winnifred’s charm and determination triumph over the queen’s devious plans? Packed with humor, heart, and unforgettable songs, Once Upon a Mattress is a musical fairy tale adventure that will leave audiences cheering!

    AGE RECOMMENDATION: Once Upon a Mattress is a family-friendly musical (based on the fairytale story The Princess and the Pea) recommended for ages 5 and up.

  • 1. Once Upon a Mattress marked the Broadway debut of comedian Carol Burnett, who originated the role of Princess Winnifred. 

    2. A Broadway revival opened in 1996 starring Sarah Jessica Parker as Princess Winnifred.

    3. A Broadway revival opened in 2024 starring Sutton Foster as Princess Winnifred.

The Sharon Playhouse is proud to introduce The Launchpad Company, a transformative new program dedicated to the memory of Mary Graf, a beloved supporter of the arts who passed away in April, 2024. Her remarkable generosity and lifelong passion for theater have inspired the creation of a pre-professional experience for local performers aged 15–20, ensuring her legacy will inspire and nurture the next generation of theater artists.

The program is aptly named The Launchpad Company because it is designed to launch local 15–20 year olds into their careers as theater artists. As the capstone experience of the Sharon Playhouse’s popular Summer YouthStage Program, it elevates the artistic journey of young people through to adulthood.
